What you are not being told about Fire Safety Week and cooking fires

2 Facts, 2 Questions, and 1 Correct Answer

Women fighting a cooking fire.
Prevention is better than Mitigation

Fact #1: Cooking fires are the Number One cause of home fires. (And yes, you have been told that).

Question #1: How is Mitigation different than Prevention?

Mitigation.

For decades fire and safety organizations have told us to use smoke alarms, keep pan lids at hand, and have a fire extinguisher nearby. And never leave the kitchen while cooking, especially with oils, and when frying!

None of these products prevent a fire from starting in the first place. They are all designed to mitigate (relieve or put down) the effects of a fire that has already started.

Even being present in the kitchen can go wrong in mere seconds if oil is nearing the flashpoint (just before auto-ignition) during deep-fat frying. Answering the phone, preparing ingredients, or not watching the stove top at the wrong moment is all it takes for an explosive, unexpected, and dangerous grease fire.

Mitigation does not prevent cooking fires.

Prevention.

You would be hard-pressed to find a fire professional who would not agree the best way to fight a fire is to not have one in the first place.

Prevention means there is no fire. Period.

Fact #2: Replacement and OEM coil burners are widely available today that can stop a cooking fire from ever starting to begin with. These burners automatically limit their temperature to stay below the auto-ignition point of a pan’s contents.

  • Spoiler Alert! Every brand of TL burners except one offers depressingly poor cooking performance. If you are running multi-family residences and want to provide a safe environment (and save some money on insurance), tenants who don’t appreciate the way these burners cook may be DIY replacing them with non-fire-preventive, store-bought coil burners. And Poof! Fire protection is deleted.

Question #2: What is the ONE and ONLY brand that PREVENTS cooking fires AND offers excellent cooking performance?

Correct Answer: GOLi Electric
